WHAT IS CHEEK AUGMENTATION?

Full round cheeks keep us look young, beautiful and healthy. As we age, the fat pads that make the cheeks fuller and plump change position and fall. Sometimes they flatten out and disappear resulting to a caved-in or sunken appearance.

HOW IS CHEEK AUGMENTATION THROUGH FAT TRANSFER DONE?

Fat is harvested from other parts of the body (hips, stomach, arms, thighs, etc.) with the use of a syringe and tumescent technique. Through a small incision, a needle is inserted in the donor site to fill the syringe. The donor fat is collected into a larger syringe for re-injection into the face. This procedure can be repeated in order to build up more volume and to compensate for some fat that is absorbed by the body. HOW IS THE PROCEDURE DONE USING CHEEK IMPLANTS?

Cheek augmentation is an outpatient procedure done within 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the extent of the correction. Local anesthesia is used. A specially designed implant material is inserted into a small incision inside the mouth.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT KINDS OF CHEEK IMPLANTS?

Filler materials include synthetic and non-synthetic materials. Synthetic materials include solid silicone elastomer, Gore-tex and Softform which are designed for permanent implantation. Non-synthetic materials include Alloderm and Fascian which are made of collagen and other protein-like substances taken from the human body. Our surgeon will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the options during a consultation.

WHAT IS RECOVERY LIKE?

Temporary discomfort with swelling, bruising, stiffness and numbness will be experienced. These will be relieved by taking the prescribed pain relievers and antibiotics. A small amount of oozing within the mouth immediately after the procedure is normal – this will stop in about 2 days. Elastic tape or stretch bandages are placed over the implant site to maintain compression immediately after the operation. The patient lays down with head elevated on about 2 to 3 pillows for 24 to 48 hours. Soft diet is recommended during the 1st week to avoid unnecessary motion and strain around the implant site. For about a week, there will be some difficulty in smiling and talking. At this time, the implant is somewhat secured but malposition may occur as late as 6 weeks – so be careful not to bump your cheek. In about 2 weeks, majority of the swelling will be gone. Complete resolve of swelling and numbness takes about 3 months.

HOW SOON CAN A PATIENT GO BACK TO WORK?

Most patients go back to work in 2 to 5 days after the surgery. However, for those with strenuous job, it may take 3 weeks.

WHEN CAN RESULTS BE SEEN?

Results are visible right after the surgery. Patients will appreciate the result better 2 weeks after when most of the swelling has subsided.

CAN IT BE DONE SIMULTANEOUS WITH OTHER SURGICAL PROCEDURES?

Cheek augmentation is often done with a nose surgery and face lift in order to create the right proportion.

WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS?

Complications with this procedure are very rare. These rarities include implant malposition, asymmetry, and infection.

WHAT IS RESTYLANE?

Restylane is also known as NASHA (Non-Animal, Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid . Hyaluronic acid as we all know, is a polysacharide that is identical to all species and tissue types. Hyaluronic Acid (HA) in Restylane is stabilized that allows a longer lasting aesthetic outcome. It is injected intradermally to the skin and normally lasts from 12 to 18 months. The duration of Restylane in the skin is different for every individual. This is due to the reason that each person has different activities and may be exposed to different types of stimulus in one way or the other.
What should I prepare myself for before a Restylane treatment?
Make sure that make up is removed from area where injection will be done. Betadine wash is preferred.
Doctor will explain to you what Restylane can do for you, to let you know what to expect. Expectations should be clear in orienting patients on the outcome of each treatment. The results are guaranteed to look very natural. And more patients come back for a re-treatment simply because they would like to maintain the nice natural effect it gives. DOES IT HURT?

WHAT IS THE DO’S AND DON’TS AFTER A RESTYLANE INJECTION?

Do put ice immediately after injection to lessen the pain and swelling. For lips, its better to use a new lip gloss and/or lip stick to avoid infection. One must know that swelling may last up to 7 days so this means, that one should allow the areas of injection to heal as naturally.
